Three Stages of Hair Growth

There are three stages in a hair's growth cycle. The hair follicles in the scalp are at different stages at any one time. Some general knowledge that should be known by all :

  • Everyone has 100,000 - 150,000 hairs.
  • Hair grows at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month.
  • Each individual hair has a cycle of 2-7 years and is renewed 20 - 25 times during a person's lifetime
  • It is normal to lose between 40 -100 hairs per day.
  • If your hair is subjected to stress, it takes 3 montsh (duration of the hair loss stage) before hair actually sheds.

Anagen Stage (Growing Phase)

The new hair grows from the base of the follicle. This is growth phase usually lasts between 2-4 years and results in full-grown hair.

Catagen Stage (Regression Phase)

During this stage, the hair stops growing and the hair root shrinks. The base of the follicles breaks down and the hair moves upwards, away from the root.

Telogen Stage (Resting Phase)

The matured hair is now only loosely anchored to the hair root. It usually falls off after a few months or is pushed out by the next hair which grows from below.
