What Causes Acne?
Both 'blackheads' and 'whiteheads' are formed when dead cells clump together along the lining of the hair follicle and block sebum (meant for lubrication) from exiting the pore at the top of the skin's surface. Blocked sebum which is exposed at the skin's surface is referred to as a 'blackhead'.
When a similar problem arises but the plugs remain below the skin's surface, then a closed comedo or 'whitehead' is formed.
Infection begins to take place when bacteria mixes with the trapped oil and dead skin cells which keep accumulating, hence clogging the outlet of the hair follicle.
Swelling, redness and pus are visible indications of an infection, while the actual damage is beyond sight, below the skin's surface.
